The International Bosphorus Film Festival Drew Attention to the Refugee Problem!
The 5h International Bosphorus Film Festival that is organized by the International Bosphorus Cinema Association and Istanbul Media Academy with the support of the General Directorate of Cinema of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism is starting on Friday, October 17th. The new division called “Long Walk” of this year’s festival which will screen 107 films in total from 39 countries including Brazil, India, Iran and Kyrgyzstan is bringing together 8 films -comprised of 3 feature films and 5 short films- presenting the refugee problem that became the most important subject of our era in an impressive manner. Coming to Istanbul as guest of the festival that is celebrating its 5th anniversary, the Bosnian director Aida Begić’s latest film “Never Leave Me” is also included in this special selection.
Begić’s, who is one of the world’s leading female directors, film that tells the impressive story of three kids escaping from war in Syria to Şanlıurfa about how they try to survive despite the hardships of life from children’s perspective, will make the Istanbul premiere in the festival. Begić will also undertake chairmanship of the jury of International feature Film Contest of this year’s festival, and will answer the questions of the audience by joining the film’s screening.
The cinema approach to the refugee problem
Other films to be screened in the “Long Walk” division include the Hungarian director Kornél Mundruczó’s latest film “Jupiter’s Moon” with which he competed for the Golden Palm in Cannes and awarded as the Best Director in the Austin Fantastik Fest -who also made an impact in Cannes in 2014 with the “White Dog”-; Ziad Kalthoum’s documentary called “Taste Of Cement” which tells the story of Syrian construction workers who build new skyscrapers in Beirut on top of the ruins caused by the Lebanon civil war; Anne-Claire Adet’s short documentary called “Bunkers” which tells the story of refugees that faced a forced migration to Geneva and which attracted a huge attention in the festivals; Christoph Eder and Jonas Eisenschmidt’s documentary called “Snack Bar” which projects the relationship of a family operating a snack bar in Lesbos Island with the refugees migrated to the island; Elma Neykova’s film called “Moustafa The Imam Of Lesvos” which tells the unknown story of the Muslim cemetery in the Lesbos Island from the perspective of the Egyptian refugee Mustafa Dawa; Yorgos Zois’s documentary called “8th Continent” which projects the story of the Lesbos Island that is filled with thousands of life buoys that came with the refugees and Shady El-Hamus’s short fiction called “Nightshade” which tells the story of a child named Tarık who is helping the refugees to pass to Holland borders through illegal ways.

The 5th International Bosphorus Film Festival organized by the International Bosphorus Cinema Association and Istanbul Media Academy will take place between 17-26 November this year in Istanbul, and the film screenings will be in Atlas, Beyoğlu and Kadıköy cinemas.
