2ND INTERNATIONAL BOSPHORUS FILM FESTIVAL ENDED WITH A MAGNIFICENT AWARD CEREMONY 

The International Bosphorus Film Festival that was organized for the second time by International Bosphorus Cinema Association (“UBSD”) and Istanbul Media Academy ended with the award ceremony held at Cemal Reşit Rey Concert Hall on Friday night, the November 28th.

In the award ceremony of the 2nd International Bosphorus Film Festival represented by Ebru Akel, awards in various categories as well as Ahmet Uluçay Grand Award met with their winners. 

In the ceremony night, a hologram show was performed for the 100th anniversary of the Turkish cinema. Adile Naşit, Sadri Alışık and Kemal Sunal performed sections from their films on stage through a special hologram show. Being one of the first hologram shows took place in Turkey, this very special show got huge applause from the audience. 

In the award ceremony that hosted significant names from the world cinema and Turkish cinema, one of the 10 films selected by the jury was chosen by the Grand Jury as the winner of Ahmet Uluçay Grand Award. Butter Lamp won Ahmet Uluçay Grand Award with a 50.000TL prize. Hu Wei, director of Butter Lamp, received his award.

İBB (Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality) Special Award – ÇIRAKSIZ USTALAR (MASTERS WITHOUT APPRENTICES) – Sinan Arıkan

Significant names from the world cinema and the Turkish cinema came together in the jury

The Grand Award Jury was comprised of Vice Manager of Golden Globe Awards, Lorenzo Soria, and Belçim Bilgin, and the director of the Oscar-nominated short film Buzkashi Boys’, Sam French, as well as the award winning producer and director Yasmine Golchan, and Ivana Chubbuck who coaches many Oscar-winners and Oscar-nominated actors/actresses. 

The jury on the hand, was comprised of Omar Metwally, Kristina Krepela, Amy Fox, Mick Casale, Carol Dysinger, Prakash Sharma, Tarık Tufan, Bora Gökşingöl, Cihan Aktaş, İlksen Başarır, Hamit Aydın, Ferhat Aslan, Coşkun Çokyiğit, Abdurrahman Öner and Semir Arslanyürek.

Special Design Award

A special design award with an emblem of dolphin which is the symbol of the festival was prepared for this year’s award ceremony. The awards prepared by Atasay, a significant brand in the jewellery industry, drew huge attention.

In addition, original hand-made gifts decorated with Turkish tile -which is one of the symbols of Turkey- were given to the jury members. Hand-made gifts were prepared specially for the festival by İsmail Yiğit who made a world-wide name for himself through the tile objects made by him.

“100th Year of the Cinema ”

The festival looked all set to be the most prestigious festival in the world with its short film awards

The national and international categories in the short film contest made under the festival that was organized by the International Bosphorus Cinema Association and Istanbul Media Academy, proved how assertive it is in short film category with 3682 applications it received from 102 countries. 

UBSD Production Support Grant Contest was started in order to support 100 short film producers and 20 projects were promoted to compete in the festival. On the other hand, 80 projects will be supported for being shot for the next year’s festival.

The Festival’s Executive Board Chairman, Ogün Şanlıer, stated that in the 100th year of the Turkish cinema they brought two generations together, those who carried it to date from day one and those who will carry it to the second century of it.

Many significant names both at national and international level joined the events to which participation was free of charge and which held in scope of the 2nd International Bosphorus Film Festival started on November 14th at Atlas Büyük Salon, Cine Majestik Cinemas, Tarık Zafer Tunaya Cultural Center, as well as Tophane-i Amire and Bağlarbaşı Cultural and Congress Center. 

At the same time, many film screenings took place and various programs were performed with the “Country of Guest of Honour: Poland” concept within the framework of the 600th anniversary of start of the Turkish – Poland diplomatic relations .

The films from our nearby geography were gathered together and screened under the title of “Colors of Asia”, while the examples of the main stream cinema were screened under the title of “Tentpole Films”.

All films of Derviş Zaim were screened under the title of “A portrait: Derviş Zaim”.

Also, the “100-5=Cahide” video performance which casted Zeynep Farah Abdullah and was prepared for the memory of Cahide Sonku, the living icon of the Turkish cinema, attracted a great attention in scope of the festival.

Ivana Chubbuck who coaches celebrities such as Brad Pitt, Halle Berry, Eva Mendes, Kate Bosworth, Jim Carrey, Jessica Alba, Jessica Biel, Amy Smart, and Beyoncé gave a 2-day masterclass training to professional actresses and actors including Belçim Bilgin, Cansu Tosun, Omar Metwally, Aynur Aydın, and Şükrü Özyıldız.
